In the autumn 2013, Roddy Doyld’s The Commitments made its debut at the Palace Theatre! Under the superb direction of Jamie Lloyd and adapted from the 1987 novel by famous Irish writer, Roddy Doyle, the show is a complete treat for the theatre lovers. In the year 1991, the show was immortalised into a movie version which starred Alan Parker.

 Roddy Doyle’s The  Commitments is the first in the Barrytown Trilogy. The story is set in the late 1980s Dublin and revolves around a group of unemployed musicians who attempt to bring soul music in Ireland. The story is about two friends who form a band. However, soon they realise they know nothing a regarding the music industry to seek the aid of Jimmy Rabbitte, who becomes their manager.

 Jimmey names their band The Commitments and suggests them to be unique. They need to be the first Dublin based soul group. He also plans to initiate a soul revolution in the Irish City. He advertise for more members and form a group of mis-matched individuals which is headed by Joey, The Lips, Fagan. The group struggles a lot to search their sound and also internal conflicts amongst the band members.

 The movie version went on becoming the cult music and regarded as the most popular films of Ireland. Some of the famous soundtracks of the show are "Mustang Sally", "Try a Little Tenderness", "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man", "Chain of Fools" and "In the Midnight Hour". The movie version was the winner of various prestigious awards such as BAFTA award for Best film.
