Prince of Wales Theatre was designed by C. J. Phipps when it was founded in the year 1884 and in 2004 it was refurbished by its current owner Sir Cameron Mackintosh. The initial structure was a traditional three tier auditorium ornately decorated in Moorish style with elegant white, cream and golden shades. It had a seating capacity of 8000 people and got its present name after King Edward V?.

After fifty years, the seating capacity was found to be insufficient to accommodate the growing theatre lovers of the town. The structure was demolished and foundations were laid for the new Art Deco-decorated building designed by eminent designer Robert Cromie.

In 1941 Alfred Esdaile made an audacious attempt by premiering Charlie Chaplin’s controversial ‘The Great Dictator’, which was banned in most of the Europe and the results were evident, the owner was fined. 50s introduced a lot of variety and revues to Prince of Wales and some great performers of all time like Norman Wisdom, Peter Sellers, Bob Hope, Gracie Fields and Benny Hill performed on its stage.

The 2004 renovations have taken up the seating space to 1160 and introduced many modern amenities like addition of few more bars, LED lighting, redecoration of its legendry towers and so on. The theatre is currently located at Coventry Street in the city of Westminster, London.
